Family Literacy

Want to help your children succeed?
Children learn first from their parents

Research has shown that the parents’ levels of literacy and education are the most important factors in their children’s school readiness, reading levels and other school achievements

Northern Connections provides upgrading for parents and caregivers to improve their own literacy, numeracy and other basic skills, so that they can in turn help their children to succeed. We have resources and classes of particular interest to parents including:

Parenting Skills

Book making

Cooking with childrern

Family math fun

Making photo journals

We also work with Northern Frontenac Community Services Children’s Services, Kingston Literacy & Skills’ Family Literacy and the Ontario Early Years Literacy Specialist.

Throughout the year, Northern Connections runs a variety of individual workshops and series on numerous topics of interest to our community. These workshops are presented by our staff or by specialists from the community. Some topics we have covered are:

Wills and Powers of Attorney (Rural Legal Services)

Landlord & Tenants (Rural Legal Services)
